Project Background & Objectives
Regional Banking Institution was losing 2,400 digital-native customers per month to neobanks, solely because their existing mobile app — built in 2018 — lacked features their customers expected as standard: biometric login, instant fund transfers, expense categorisation, and real-time push notifications. Internal surveys showed 71% of customers aged 18–35 had a neobank account alongside their Regional Banking Institution account, using the latter only for salary credit. Dristi Technologies designed and delivered a bank-grade mobile application that reversed this attrition and became Regional Banking Institution's primary acquisition channel within 9 months of launch.
Customers judge the security of a bank by the speed and intelligence of its app. Counterintuitively, adding biometrics, AI-driven fraud alerts, and instant notifications actually increased perceived trustworthiness more than traditional security education campaigns.
What Problem Were We Solving?
Regional Banking Institution's legacy mobile app scored 2.1/5 on both iOS App Store and Google Play. It lacked biometric authentication, requiring customers to enter a 12-digit customer ID and password each login. International transfers required visiting a branch. The app crashed on Android 13 and iOS 16 due to SDK deprecations the internal team lacked capacity to address. Meanwhile, RBI's digital banking guidelines mandated specific security controls — including end-to-end encryption of all transaction data and customer-level audit logs — that the existing app did not satisfy.
How We Delivered Results
We built a React Native application with a shared 85% codebase across iOS and Android, cutting ongoing maintenance costs significantly. Biometric authentication (Face ID and fingerprint) was implemented using the device's secure enclave — credentials never leave the device. An AI-driven spending insights engine categorises transactions in real time using a fine-tuned NLP model. Real-time push notifications for every transaction are delivered via Firebase with sub-2-second latency. Bank-grade encryption (AES-256) covers all data at rest and in transit, and the app passed a third-party penetration test with zero critical findings.
Conducted 60 user interviews across 3 customer segments, benchmarked 12 neobanks, and ran a UX audit of the existing app to produce a prioritised feature roadmap.
Designed the security model with Regional Banking Institution's CISO team, documented RBI compliance mapping for all 23 regulatory controls, and engaged a third-party pen tester from day one.
Built the shared codebase with modular feature flags for bank-specific customisation, integrated 7 existing banking APIs, and established an automated regression test suite with 94% coverage.
Ran a 3,500-user closed beta for 8 weeks, addressed 94 UX issues and 3 security findings before wide release, achieving a 4.7/5 rating in the first week on both stores.
